The short version: Petal doesn't have accounts, doesn't collect your personal information, and doesn't run analytics or ads. Your library — the books you add, your progress, your reading goals and streaks — is stored only on your own device. We never see it.
Petal has no sign-up, no login, and no server that stores information about you. We don't collect your name, email address, location, device identifiers, or usage analytics. We don't use advertising or third-party tracking SDKs.
Everything you enter into Petal — your books, reading progress, reading goals, streak history, and the name field on your profile if you choose to fill it in — is saved locally on your phone using standard on-device storage. It is never transmitted to us or to any server we operate. If you delete the app, that data is deleted with it.
When you search for a book to add to your library, the title or author text you type is sent to
Open Library (openlibrary.org),
a free, third-party book database operated by the Internet Archive, so we can show you matching titles, authors,
and cover art. That search text is sent directly from your device to Open Library — we don't see or store it
ourselves. Open Library's own privacy practices govern how they handle that request; see
their privacy policy for details.
You can always skip search and add a book manually instead, which avoids this entirely.
If you use the "Import from Goodreads" feature, the CSV file you choose is read and processed entirely on your own device. It is never uploaded to us or to any other server.
Petal is not directed at children under 13, and since we don't collect personal information from anyone who uses the app, we don't knowingly collect information from children.
If this policy ever changes — for example, if we add features that work differently, like optional account sync — we'll update this page and change the date at the top.
